Black-Crowned Night-Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax)

This state endangered species is regularly seen at Stillman during the summer months.  The night-heron is intermediate in size between the larger great blue heron and the smaller green heron. While they do hunt fish and frogs at night, they can be seen during the day.
This bird, for example, was photographed near our main viewing dock on a warm July afternoon. Black-crowned night-herons can be spotted on every continent except Australia and Antarctica. Should you get a close enough view, you'll never forget those blood-red eyes.
